Rectal bleeding or blood in stool is commonly caused by hemorrhoids and anal fissures. However, there are many other causes of blood in stool like colitis, diverticulosis, polyps or colon cancer. Therefore, the blood in stool needs to be investigated so a serious cause is not missed.

Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy is a test used to find out the cause of rectal bleeding. Polyps can be removed or a biopsy can be taken during the test.
